Description

Overall size: corpus diameter 409; bell diameter 239. Sounding length: segment lengths: mouthpipe 146; intermediate segments 442, 600, 337, 1095, 1124; bell segment 885. Bore: mouthpipe 7.6; 39mm from bell end, 125.5. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 8.4 at end. Technical description: 3½ coils; yellow brass. Metal construction: mouthpipe, 5 intermediate segments and bell, first joint overlapping, next two joints under ferrules, last three joints overlapping; all tubing seamed; gusseted bell, garland width 32. Inscribed on bell garland "NICHS WINKINGS MAKER / RED LION STREET HOLBORN / LONDON". Many small patches on body and larger ones on bell, the latter covering cracks. The present second intermediate segment may be a replacement of part what is now the third intermediate segment; the two ferrules covering joints are almost certainly repairs. General usage of type: Orchestral / chasse use. Usable pitch: Plays 30 50 cents above A4 = 415 Hz. Performance characteristics: Plays freely to above 16th natural note. 11th natural note much sharper than (2627). Specific literature references: Bingham, 1983 item 10; G.S.(1986) No. 133.
