DescriptionThe body of the Stroh violin consists of a long narrow roughly conical piece of wood (here stamped “Strohviols” in a cartouche / TRADE MARK / REGISTERED), either with the upper surface serving as a fingerboard or (as here) a separate angled fingerboard. This attached via a bridge placed on a metal ‘mount’ which links to the horn(s) via a flexible membrane. Concert models (such as this one) have two horns, a large horn serving (as in a horn gramophone) to direct and amplify the sound towards the microphone or listener (respectively) and a smaller horn that could be directed towards the player. The chin rest is ebonite and permanently joined to the metal shoulder rest, stamped “MADE IN ENGLAND”. Signature marks: Painted in gold on body above the bridge: (within an ornate gold cartouche) STROVIOLS / trade Mark / Registered; (on shoulder rest) Made / in / England |
