According to the firm's archives [instrument books], the instrument was "Eb Circular", Model B98 L.P., made by Fairchild in a batch of 2, probably to special order. Technical description: Silver-plated brass. With short curved bit. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves. Overall size: 1080; bell 346. Sounding length: Bit overall length 62. Bore: v.t.s. (1,2,3) 16.6, m.t.s. 18.6 - 19.7. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 13.7 - 12.9. Bit internal taper 13.9 - 13.0; external taper 12.8 - 13.6. Inscribed on bell "L.P." / hawk and trumpet trademark / "Boosey & Hawkes Ltd / Makers / 295 Regent St / London W1. / 149373 / D.Y.R.M.S. / 8."; on side of 2nd valve casing "116320". With black wooden shaped fitted case, with paper labels: "The Pasadena Roof Orchestra", "The Temperance Seven", "BIX LIVES / BIX BEIDERBECKE MEMORIAL SOCIETY DAVENPORT, IOWA". Plating worn. Usable pitch: Plays at A4 = 439 Hz. Specific usage history: used by previous owner in Temperance Seven etc.; previously used in the Duke of York's Royal Military School for whom it may have been specifically made. |
