DescriptionTechnical description: Dark stained wood; 8 sections; silver keys; silver cutter for right-hand pipe; ivory ferrules and top caps; left-hand pipe has 5 finger-holes (top one containing ebony plug), and keys for upper D, F♯ (open-standing, covering 4th hole down when depressed), F♮ and D♯; right-hand pipe has 3 finger-holes, and keys for upper C (thumb, with ebony plug in key-hole), B, F♮, and low D (open-standing, covering 4th hole down when depressed); high C key on lower part of head section (LH pipe), played with L0; 2 parallel pipes connected at top between caps; hole for mouthpiece at side of RH pipe; vent-hole at foot of each pipe; lip operated cutter on RH pipe. Keymount type: ring/knob. Keyhead type: flat square, notched and chamfered for closed keys; flat round for open-standing keys (F♯ and low D). Stamped on lower part of head section of each pipe with royal arms and "BAINBRIDGE / INVENTOR / 35 / HOLBORN HILL / LONDON" and "NEW PATENT"; parts of this inscription stamped on other sections; stamped with note names by keyheads for B and F♮ on RH pipe, and by keyheads for D, F♮ and D♯ on LH pipe; "NEW C" stamped beside key on lower part of head section (LH pipe). Repair History: Narrow leather belt fastened around upper parts to maintain proximity of pipes. Performance characteristics: Lowest note sounds D⁴. Usable pitch: A⁴ = c 451 Hz (c 45 cents above A⁴ = 440 Hz). |
