Description

3 valves plus intonation slide. Technical description: Silver-plated brass. With slide action to control intonation, elastic return, for R4. Shank for F and E♮; single-coil crook for E♭ and D; quick-change valve for E and D respectively. Overall size: 583; bell 112. Sounding length: instrument without shank or crook, 1647; crook overall air column length 316 (adds 297); crooked and valved in Eb, overall air column 1944; crooked and valved in D, overall air column 2062. Bore: minimum (crook), 10.8; at all three v.t.s. and intonation slide 11.0; at tuning slide for quick change valve 11.6 (anomalously, since this is in the middle of intonation slide whose bore is 11.0); at m.t.s. 11.0 - 11.8; at c 256mm from bell end, 15.6; at 15.3mm from bell end, 67.3. B = 0.78 (in F); B = 0.81 (in D). Bell cutoff = 1500 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: Crook receiver taper 12.8 - 11.7; crook external taper 11.8 - 12.7; crook m.r.t. 11.0 (not tapered). Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, bottom sprung; rotary quick-change valve. Signature marks: Inscribed on bell "GOLD MEDAL / PARIS 1878 / C. MAHILLON / LONDON / MADE AT THEIR / BRUSSELS / WORKS". Valve piston tops and underside of top caps stamped "7", "8", "9". Playing accessories: Eb.D crook. With modern canvas shaped bag. Shank for F and E_ missing. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch; can only play at A⁴ = 439 Hz with both main tuning-slide and intonation slide extended. Performance characteristics: The input impedance and harmonicity of the air-column resonances are reported in Myers and Campbell 2006.
