DescriptionNominal pitch: B♭ / A. 3 valves. Technical description: Silver-plated brass. Rotary quick-change valve for B♭ to A; alternative set of four tuning-slides for A₄ 439 Hz. Two water-keys. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves; `New Valve Action' (top sprung; springs extend when valves operated). According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was "Clip Trumpet A Gilt Bell", made in a batch of twelve. Inscribed on upper side of bell "BOOSEY & HAWKES LTD" / "N.V.A." and "Clippertone" superimposed / "LONDON"; and on lower side of bell "142949" and "PLATED BY BOOSEY & HAWKES LTD"; on side of quick-change valve "2"; on cap of quick-change valve "B♭" and "A"; on side of 1st valve "49", 2nd valve "50 / 112242 / PATENT 193729", 3rd valve "51"; on valve bottom caps "49", "50", "51". One set of alternative slides (main tuning-slide & three valve tuning-slide) inscribed "L.P."; other set have no inscription. Decorative features: Gilt inside bell; art-deco style bell engraving; mother-of-pearl inlaid valve touchpieces. Performance characteristics: more responsive and better in tune in A than in B♭. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch and A⁴ = 439 Hz; a shallow mouthpiece is required, otherwise plays flat. Purchased by lender with and probably formerly used with mouthpiece (3213). Specific usage history: Used by Christopher Monk (1921-1971). Overall size: 492; bell 116 Sounding length: minimum 1286 (with high-pitch slide). Bore: at c 25 from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 10.0; m.t.s. at c 170mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning-slide bore 11.1; centre of valve cluster at c mm from mouthpiece receiver (with high-pitch slide), v.t.s. bore (3,2,1) 11.2; at 643mm from bell end, c 11.25; at 296mm from bell end, 15.9.
