DescriptionThis open-framed instrument has a frame of stained sycamore; neck and scroll of sycamore; endbutton of ebony; pegs of boxwood; fingerboard of stained rosewood(?). The instrument is violin-shaped and consists of the outline, a longitudinal centre piece, and a cross piece under the bridge which has an arched piece of ebony glued to it and takes a standard violin bridge. The instrument has a walnut-coloured varnish and a standard violin scroll. Measurements: Neck 131mm long; fingerboard 252mm long, 22.5mm wide at nut, 38.9mm wide at bottom. Traces of Reid Colection label. One peg and bridge missing. Frame cracked and broken in several places near the cross piece. Specific literature references: Hipkins 1885, p. 129.
