DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. 1st, 2nd and 3rd valves double with respect to 4th. Mouthpipe leads via main tuning-slide to lower port of the 4th valve. If the 4th valve is not operated, the windway leads to the lower port of the 3rd valve, which acts normally, thence via the lower ports of the 2nd valve and 1st valve, which also act normally, back to the upper port of the 4th valve, thence to the bell. If the 4th valve is operated, the windway leads via a tuning-slide to the upper port of the 3rd valve which acts normally, thence via the upper ports of the 2nd valve and 1st valve, which also act normally, back to the upper port of the 4th valve, thence to the bell. The upper valve loops are longer than the lower. With a short straight shank, the instrument is pitched in C, 4th valve giving instrument in A; with looped crook (similar to usual cornet crook for A♭), instrument is pitched in B♭, 4th valve then giving instrument in G.The 4th valve tuning-slide has a longer than usual moving section, suggesting provision had been made for a shorter slide giving an instrument in C + B♭ or B♭ + A♭. The upper 3rd valve tuning-slide also has a longer than usual moving section, suggesting provision had been made for a shorter slide giving a 2-semitone lowering for the 3rd valve (like the 1st valve) when the 4th valve was operated. Valve type: 4 Périnet-type valves, bottom-sprung, alignment by key on piston. Maker: Possibly made by Millereau. Paris. Post 1884, probably c 1889. Overall size: 335; bell 127. Sounding length: Crook overall air column length (single coil) 254. Bore: crook at c 60mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.8; crook at distal end, 10.2; instrument body at c 35mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 10.2; m.t.s. at c 207mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bore 11.3; v.t.s. (4,1,2,3) 11.6. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: Crook internal taper 9.7 9.3, external taper 11.2 11.7. Shank/crook receiver taper 12.2 11.1. Valve type: 4 Périnet type valves, bottom sprung, alignment by key on piston. Inscribed on bell "CORNET ARBAN" / monogram JB / "le seul adopté / AU CONSERVATOIRE / L. Bouvet / Ingénieur / Rue Michel Bizot 182 / Paris"; on side of 4th valve casing "Cornet Arban Systeme Bouvet BTÉ SGDG / No 21". Crook inscribed on mouthpipe "LAB". Apparently virtually new and unused, but patinated with age. Probable shank for C + A missing. Stay unsoldered between bell and 3rd valve tuning slide outer. Operating linkage for 4th valve missing, presumably not completed. Crook has two longitudinal splits in loop, and is unsoldered between coils. |
