Technical description: Brass. `Patent Conical Bore' long (Military) model large bore; fixed mouthpipe obviating shanks, slide pull for change from B♭ to A between 1st and 3rd valves with restraining rod, bore increased incrementally in the ten arms of the valve, main and A slides. Water-keys on main tuning-slide and A change slide. Valve type: 3 Périnet-type valves, top-sprung with spring outside stem, alignment by key on piston. Cornet. Nominal pitch: Bb A. Bore: bit (a) at distal end (minimum bore) 7.6; bit (b) at distal end (minimum bore) 7.5; instrument body at c 30mm from mouthpiece (minimum bore) 8.8; m.t.s. at c 152mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bores 10.7 11.2; 2nd v.t.s. 11.1 11.2; 1st v.t.s. 11.4 11.6; A tuning slide 11.7 11.9; 3rd v.t.s. 12.2 12.3; 19mm from bell end, 68.5; at 18.9mm from bell end, 68.5. Bell cutoff = 1200 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 9.6 9.0; internal taper of both tuning bits 9.5 8.6; external taper of both tuning bits also 9.5 8.6. Inscribed on bell "TESTED / BY / W. O'KEEFE" / coat of arms /"Patent / 1903 / RUDALL CARTE & CO / Manufacturers / 23 / BERNERS STREET / OXFORD STREET / LONDON / No 5171". Valve casings and caps inscribed "88", "89", "90". Decorative features: Engraved top and bottom valve caps. Playing accessories: 2 tuning bits, and music card holder. Black top opening box, cleaning brush. General literature references: KLUSSMAN, H. et al. (trading as Rudall Carte & Co), 1903. G.B. Patent No 21,295, accepted 31st December 1903. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch. Playable in Bb at A4 = 440 Hz with both tuning bits, but not in A. Purchased by lender with and probably formerly used with trumpet mute (621). Previous ownership: Bought by Messrs J. & R. Glen 18th December 1974 from an old bandsman.
