Description

Technical description: Brass. Clapper key. Outer tuning-slides attached to slide bows; inner slides attached to instrument body. Two shanks, for B♭ and A and two crooks, for A♭ and G; not labelled. Valve type: 3 Stölzel valves in V-formation with spring inside sleeve; alignment by key on sleeve, and rectangular stem. Inscribed on square silver plate on bell "Roe / MAKER / LIVERPOOL". Maker: Roe. Liverpool. 1832 51, probably c 1845. Overall size: 270; bell 122. Sounding length: overall air column lengths: shanks (a) 71, (b) 153; crooks (c) 220, (d) 331. Bore: shank (a) at distal end (minimum bore) 9.7; shank (b) at distal end (minimum bore) 9.8; crook (c) at c 40mm from mouthpiece receiver, 10.8; crook (c) at distal end, 9.8; crook (d) at c 55mm from mouthpiece receiver, 10.8; crook (d) at distal end, 9.9; instrument body at c 50mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) c 10.7; m.t.s. at c 230mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bore 11.4; v.t.s. (1,2,3) 11.4. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: internal tapers of shanks (a) 11.7 11.4, (b) 11.6 11.4, crooks (c) 11.7 11.3, (d) 11.8 11.4; external tapers of shanks (a) 11.3 12.2, (b) 11.3 12.1, crooks (c) 11.5 12.5, (d) 11.2 12.0; shank/crook receiver taper 12.1 11.6. Inscribed on square silver plate on bell "Roe / MAKER / LIVERPOOL". With fitted case. Protective caps for valve touches. Clapper key touchpiece and spring missing. Probable F, E and Eb crooks/couplers missing. Usable pitch: In present condition plays at c A4 = 440 Hz. Performance characteristics: leaks in present condition, so poor response. Allocated with and possibly formerly used with mouthpiece (956).
