Description

Technical description: The round, concave, pernambuco (?) (or brazilwood) stick has a red varnish, a leather grip, a winding of alternating `whalebone' and metal thread and ends in a modern head with an ivory headface and ebony headface lining. Near the head, the stick is very narrow. The screw-mechanism, squared, ebony frog has a nickel underslide, a nickel heelplate, a nickel ferrule with a wooden ferrule wedge, and a mother-of-pearl slide. The underslide is held in place by two screws, one on either side of the screw eye. The ebony button has nickel rings and is octagonal with a rim. Measurements: Weight: 59.5g. Hair length: 648mm. Balance point: 259mm. Head height: 23.8mm. Head width: 9.9mm. Face length: 22.5mm. Tip diameter: 5.6mm. Frog diameter: 8.9mm. Nipple range:1.0 to 1.2mm. Period of oscillation: 1.36. Distance from pivot to tail: 67.8mm. Button length: 15.3mm. Ferrule width: 13.0mm. Frog + stick height: 26.9mm. Frog top length: 44.8mm. No inscriptions. General usage of type: Trade bow. Associated by pre-1969 labelling with violin (324) and bow (338). Current ownership: Gift of E.D. Wilson of Edinburgh, 1967. (Reid Collection).
