DescriptionThis violin has a soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, scroll and neck of sycamore; fingerboard, tailpiece, tail-gut protector and endbutton of ebony; pegs of rosewood. The soundboard is joined in the centre, but the grain is not well matched, the bass side having closer grain than the treble side. Some slight tree damage can be seen on the bass side in the lower bout region. The instrument has ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling and a golden varnish with reddish tinge. It is much used; the varnish has worn away in places, there is a mark where the chin rests against the soundboard, and there is ingrained dirt on the right lower bout and right upper bout. The ribs and back have light figuring. The 2 piece back, which has not been glued very well, has figure going towards the top in the centre and down at the edges. The neck has been re-set at the modern angle. Measurements: Neck length 132mm; fingerboard length 270mm, width at nut 22.1mm, at bottom 43.5mm. Soundboard arch 16.5mm; Back arch 15mm. Handwritten inside "fait-e par Jum(---) / 1825", could be 'Jumamo'. Playing accessories: small crescent-shaped chin-rest, 1 fine tuner, brass mute, chin-pad and rosin in box. With wedge-shaped black-painted wooden case with roof-shaped top, lined with royal blue baize, quilted cover of puce silk; with key. The varnish is missing on the back at the top on the treble side, and over all of the lower bout. The treble upper bout rib has been broken and repaired 38mm from the neck. Associated with bow (0751). Current ownership: Gift of Miss J.G. Thom of Edinburgh, 1969. (Reid Collection). |
