Description

Technical description: Brass with silver rim; Three-part construction: the brass rim is soldered to the brass body, and covered with thin sheet silver. The brass components are made to accommodate the silver covering. The body is thin enough to be of sheet brass, there is no evidence of a longitudinal seam although the seam between cup and rim is visible. Narrow fitting; round rim contour; maximum bite curvature 1.25; cuspoid cup shape. Cup volume 3137; shape quotient 0.654. Overall size: length 66.7; external diameter 23.0. Sounding length: cup depth c 50. Bore: cup diameter 16.2; minimum diameter 5.3. Depth of taper: shank tapers smoothly to join rim of cup. Diameter of taper: minimum 6.6. No inscriptions. Probably purchased with and possibly supplied by manufacturer with orchestral horn (204). Specific literature references: G.S. (1968) No. 289. Probably purchased by Professor John Donaldson for the Music Classroom, University of Edinburgh, from Thomas Glen, 2 North Bank Street, 14 November 1855 with orchestra horn (204); in which case it had possibly previously belonged to Sir Wm. Keith Murray, and before that to D. Hamilton, Edinburgh, who recorded having bought it from the maker in Dresden.
