DescriptionTechnical description: Soundboard of close grain bookmatched spruce. Soundhole 80.7mm diameter. Purfling around soundhole consisting of an ebony strip around the edge of the soundhole and then alternate ebony/ivory strips (10 pairs). The edging around the soundboard consists of ivory, with 5 pairs of ebony/ivory strips with an additional ebony strip at the inside. The bridge is of ebony, the main section being rectangular, approximately 85mm long and 27.3mm wide, then having concave curves on the upper side and an S-curve on the lower side creating a moustache-shaped point with ebony dot terminals and mother-of-pearl eyes. The bridge saddle is of ivory. There are six ebony bridge pins with mother-of-pearl eyes. The sides are of rosewood, bookmatched, with a triangular strip at the bottom, which has an ebony endpin in it. Edging between the back and sides of ivory. Back of one piece of rosewood laminated onto maple. The back has a rosewood strip, 14mm wide and 2mm thick from the heel cap to the centre at the waist, and notched ivory strips, to act as holders for a "Tripodion" stand, as invented by Aguado. The heel, neck and head are of ebonised wood, probably maple. The heel and neck join with a sharp division, and the neck has a V joint to the head. Heel cap of ivory. Machine heads of brass with ivory buttons and rollers. Fingerboard of ebony, raised above, and glued to, the soundboard. Modern type frets, 17 in total. Ivory nut. Width of neck 46.5mm at nut, 57.4mm at the body join. Mother-of-pearl positioning dots at frets 5, 7, and 9. Two labels under the soundhole. The top one has a handwritten inscription "C. Boullangier", which is affixed slightly over the main printed label reading "MANUFACTURER OF STRINGS / GUT AND SILVER / IMPORTER OF FOREIGN / MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS / C. BOULLANGIER / (FROM VIULLAUME & GAND OF PARIS.) / DEPOT OF THE BEST ROMAN STRINGS / Violin, Violoncello and Guitar Maker / 40, Dean Street, Soho. / LONDON / INSTRUMENTS REPAIRD. / ALL WORK WARRANTED / DEPOT OF THE BEST FRENCH BOWS", at the top of the label, in the same hand as the handwritten label above it, is "ANNO 1848".
