DescriptionThis is likely a small instrument for a child. It has a spruce soundboard; sycamore ribs, back, neck, and scroll; an ebony fingerboard, tailpiece, and pegs; and a rosewood endpin. The soundboard is close grained, and there is purfling made from 3 strips of sycamore, the outer strips being black stained. The f-holes have not been fully cut through at the top and bottom extremes. There are 6 ribs, and the back is made from 20 pieces of wood, also with purfing. The scroll and peg box are of fine quality. Fingerboard has been flattened under the bass string. The varnish on the instrument is clear, giving it a light colour. Measurements: Neck length 234; fingerboard length 463, width at nut 27.7, at bottom 56.8, width of head behind nut 36.8. Top arch 19.5; Bottom arch 16.5. Repair History: Soundboard is coming loose at the top, a number of long cracks, all but one now repaired. Inscription: Label glued to the inside of the instrument "JAMES GILCHRIST / Violin Maker / CENTRAL CHAMBERS 109 HOPE STREET / GLASGOW" and handwritten along the edges of the label "No 59" and "1892" Playing accessories: tail-pin. Separately stored bridge un-labelled, sycamore, repaired but still broken. Soundpost 123 long, 9.2 diameter. Notch about 10mm from one end, remaining diameter 7.3. Specific usage history: Exhibited in 'Instruments of Music' exhibition, Glasgow, 1941. Current ownership: Lent by the Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries (Farmer Collection). |
