Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. of crooks (531a) 8.2 at end, (531b) 8.1 at end, (531c) 8.1 at end, (531d) 8.1 at end, (531e) 8.2 at end, (531f) 8.2 at end, (531g) 8.1 at end, (531h) 8.0 at end; external tapers of crooks (531a) 12.3 12.8, (531b) 12.2 12.8, (531c) 12.1 12.8, (531d) 12.2 12.8, (531e) 12.2 12.8, (531f) 12.2 12.8, (531g) 12.2 12.8, (531h) 12.0 12.9. Crook receiver taper on coupler (531i) 13.1 12.4; external taper of coupler (531i) 12.1 12.8. Crook/coupler receiver taper on body 13.1 12.5. Technical description: 2½ coils excluding crooks; angle between axis of mouthpipe / crook receiver and axis of bell 127; yellow brass. Metal construction: seamed tubing throughout; single seamed bell; transversely seamed garland, width 32; tubular sheet stays. Two tuning slides, differing in air column length by 51mm. With terminal crooks (531a) 1 coil for Bb alto, (531b) 1 coil for A, (531c) 1 coil for G, (531d) 2 coil for F, (531e) 2 coil for E, (531f) 2 coil for Eb, (531g) 3 coil for D, (531h) 3 coil for C, which differs from the others in its mouthpiece ferrule and diamond shaped plate, and coupler (531i) 1 coil for Bb basso with crook (531h). Inscribed on bell "CHARLES KRETZSCHMANN / A STRASBOURG"; on crooks (531a) "SI.1", (531b) "LA.1", (531c) "SOL.1", (531d) "FA.1", (531e) "MI.1", (531f) "MIB.1", (531g) "RE.1", (531h) "UT"; on coupler (531i) "SIB.1"; on both tuning slides "No 1". With fitted box, possibly original. Crook (531h) has some possibly significant dents. Small patch on bell taper. Crook (531h) a replacement supplied by Reginald Morley Pegge. General usage of type: Standard orchestral horn in first quarter of 19th century. Usable pitch: Plays at A4 = 440 Hz. Performance characteristics: French type instrument with French crooks, but of medium bore producing bigger, darker sound than average French horn, in keeping with geographic origin.
