DescriptionTechnical description: Silver-plated brass. The leadpipe goes between the two legs of the 3rd valve tuning-slide. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the front; 3rd valve loop leaves from left and returns to right; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the left. With double water-key with single touchpiece. With shanks (a) for B♭, (b) for A, and crook (c) for A♭. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top sprung with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by three unequal lugs on spring plate. Repair History: Bell section had suffered crumpling about 160mm from end, but this has been adequately repaired. The underside at this point has a soft-solder patch about 9 × 15mm, not elegant but inconspicuous and functional. Maker: Antoine Courtois, Paris. 1867 72, probably 1871. Serial number: 7944; 4153. Overall size: 313; bell 121. Sounding length: overall lengths of shank (a) 89, shank (b) 169; crook (c) 258 (single coil). Bore: shank (a) at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.9; shank (a) at distal end, 10.1; shank (b) at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.3; shank (b) at distal end, 10.1; crook (c) at c 50mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.4; crook (c) at distal end, 10.2; instrument body at c 30mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore), 10.2; m.t.s. at c 252mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bores 11.3 11.8; v.t.s. (3, 2, 1) 11.8. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. of shank (a) 9.4 8.9, shank (b) 9.3 8.9, crook (c) 9.3 8.9. External taper of shank (a) 11.4 12.2, shank (b) 11.4 12.3, crook (c) 11.3 12.3. Shank/crook receiver taper 12.0 11.0. Inscribed on bell "Koenig Model" / "MEDAILLE / DE / 1RE CLASSE / EXPOSITION / UNIVERSELLE / 1856" within circle / "Médaille / LONDRES 1862 / Exposition Universelle / PARIS 1867 / Médaille d'Honneur / EN ARGENT / ANTOINE COURTOIS / Breveté / FACTEUR DU CONSERVATOIRE / 88.rue Des Marais / Paris / S.ARTHUR CHAPPELL / Sole Agent / 52 new Bond Street London". Inscribed on bell rim "4153"; on side of valve casings and on bottom caps "1", "2", "3". Stamped inside 3rd valve top cap "7944". Stamped on shank (a) "sib"; on shank (b) "LA"; on crook (c) "LAb". Playing accessories: A music card holder is associated, but the instrument has no fitting to attach it. With fitted brown leather case, ornately tooled, probably not original. Underside of bell section bow has a dent, length c 22mm and max depth c 6mm in tubing diameter 14mm, which may affect performance and could probably be removed. Bell section had suffered crumpling about 160mm from end, but this has been adequately repaired. The underside at this point has a soft solder patch about 9 15mm, not elegant but inconspicuous and functional. Previous ownership: ex Trevor Picken collection. |
