General literature references: The patent C sharp mechanism is rather unusual: it differs from that of Tyler's G.B. Patent No. 1308 of 1862, which used a hinge C_ key with a hinged C# beside it closed by either R4 or L4; and from J.B. Albert's G.B. Patent No. 23001 of 1896 (via S.A. Chappell) which is not very clear, but seems to approximate to the modern `patent C sharp' mechanism, but with a slightly different layout. Usable pitch: modern pitch, A₄ = c 440 Hz. Used in pair with A clarinet (1088) (shares 3 barrels and mouthpiece with that instrument). Specific literature references: McAllister 1978 (obituary for Clucas). Illustration references: Follan 1987b, p.39 (printed upside down). Specific usage history: W.T. Clucas was principal clarinet in the Scottish Orchestra (now the Royal Scottish National Orchestra) c 1920 1940. Ordered 1902, delivered 1903 and used until 1972. |
