Description

Technical description: Silver-plated brass. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the right; 3rd valve loop leaves from front and returns to 30° left of front; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at 30° left of back. With single water-key; with screw for music card-holder. With shank for B♭, not original. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top-sprung with spring outside valve stem; alignment by key on piston. Repair History: The shank for B♭ is a replacement. Maker: J. Higham. Manchester. Circa 1894. Serial number: 52146. Overall size: 330; bell 123. Sounding length: overall length of shank 85.9. Inscribed on bell "PATENT / CLEAR BORE / CHAMPION / MODEL / CLASS / A" / lion and unicorn motif / "EXHIBITION / PRIZE MEDAL / AWARDED / TO / J. HIGHAM LTD / MAKERS / 127 STRANGEWAYS / MANCHESTER / ENGLAND / 52146" / embossed circular plaque with lion and unicorn motif. Inscribed on 2nd valve casing "52146"; on tops of 2nd and 3rd valve pistons "2", "3". Decorative features: Floral decoration on bell. The shank for Bb is a replacement. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch.
