DescriptionSilver-plated brass. Ligature tuning at mouthpipe; water-key. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top sprung; alignment by key on piston. Repair History: The tuning shank may be a replacement provided to lower the pitch of the instrument from Old Philharmonic to A₄ 440 Hz. Original fitting for music card holder was soldered to outer 3rd valve tuning-slide, now missing and replaced by a removable fitting to clamp on this tuning-slide, from the same period. Inscribed on bell "CLASS / A" / "50 MEDALS OF HONOUR" within ribbon / monogram FB / "BESSON & Co. / Prototype / 198 EUSTON ROAD / LONDON / ENGLAND" / five-pointed star; on side of 2nd valve casing "BESSON & Co. / five-pointed star / BREVETE", all within ellipse, and "107806"; on valve top and bottom caps and side of casings "10", "11", "12". |
