DescriptionTechnical description: Horn of Raoux pattern with three Périnet valves mounted on distal branch of tuning-slide. This high-pitch instrument has not been modified to low pitch. Long stem valves and valve slides for use with F crooks and longer, rather than higher pitched crooks. Metal construction: yellow brass with seamed gusseted bell segment, remainder appearing seamless; bell garland, width 22; reinforcing strip on outside of bell curve. Valve type: Long-stem Périnet valves. Repair History: New stay made, 1983. Serial number: 125099 (instrument); 96853 (valves). According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was model A41, made by Bloomfield in a batch of six. Overall size: Corpus diameter 330; bell diameter 283. Sounding length: mouthpipe length 430; segment lengths, from distal end of ferrule after valves 561; bell segment 942. Bore: m.t.s. 11.1; v.t.s. (1,2,3) 11.1. Bell flare:- Dia of mouthpiece receiver: crook receiver taper on body 12.9 - 12.2. Inscribed on bell: monogram "B & Co" / "Sotone / (REGISTERED)". Inscribed on garland "Boosey & Co Ltd", trumpet trademark "Makers London / 125099". Inscribed on 2nd valve casing: trumpet trademark / "96853". Inscribed on valve casings, top and bottom caps "34", "35", "36". General usage of type: Orchestral and band use. Usable pitch: Playable at Old Philharmonic pitch. Performance characteristics: Typical of French model horns. Lent with mouthpiece (1868), not original; one or more crooks from (3120) - (3153) could have been associated with this horn. |
