DescriptionTechnical description: Silver-plated brass. Circular form, bell directed upwards (ventil horn layout). 3rd valve tuning-slide looped to reduce length. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, bottom-sprung; alignment by key on piston. Ventil ballad horn. Nominal pitch: C. Maker: Boosey & Co. London. 1875. Serial number: instrument 16255; valves 18333. According to the firm's archives [work shop order books], the instrument was "Ballad Horn, Ventil" Class B made by Bauer in a batch of one. Overall size: 380 perpendicular to bell; corpus diameter 250; bell 183. Sounding length: minimum 2290. Bore: instrument body at c 35mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 10.3; v.t.s. at c 360mm from shank/crook receiver, valve tuning slide bore (1,2,3), 11.7; m.t.s. at c 562mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 11.7; 1181mm from bell end, c 13.5; 1145mm from bell end, c 13.6; c 704mm from bell end, 19.1; c 657mm from bell end, 19.2. B = 0.50 with shank of (3348). Dia of mouthpiece receiver: shank receiver taper 11.7 10.9. Inscribed on bell "TRADE MARK / DISTIN" in trumpet and banner trademark; and "Patent Light Valve / BOOSEY & CO / MAKERS / 295 REGENT STT / LONDON / 16255"; on side of valve casings and top and bottom caps "1", "2", "3"; on side of 2nd valve casing "TRADE MARK / DISTIN" in trumpet and banner trademark / "18333". With black fitted wooden case. The case has positions for two mouthpieces and two shanks only, so one or more shanks, but not crooks, were part of the original equipment. Probable original short shank or shanks missing. Usable pitch: Without short shank, plays c 30 cents above Old Philharmonic pitch, the probable pitch when complete. With shank of (3348), plays at Old Philharmonic pitch; with crook of (3348), plays in Bb about 20 cents below Old Philharmonic pitch.
