Specific usage history: Lent to Horniman Museum for "Sound Designs" Exhibition 2006- General literature references: G.B. Patent Specification 256761 accepted 19 Aug 1926, Joseph Hutchison of Paisley. Joseph Hutchison of Paisley patented in 1926 a low friction trombone slide. Instead of the bearing surfaces being at one end of the inner slides (the stockings), bearing surfaces with smaller area were provided at both the top of the outer slide and the bottom of the inner slide. As a result, as the hand slide is drawn in, the inner and outer remain strictly parallel. This model was produced by Boosey & Co and Boosey & Hawkes in the late 1920s and early 1930s. According to the B&H catalogue of the very early 1930s (author's collection), Models BB43 and BB48 were the "Perfecta Truline" tenor and bass slide trombones, "With stocking each end of the Slide, giving perfect alignment the entire length of the slide." Purchased by lender with, probably formerly used with and possibly supplied by manufacturer with mouthpiece (2497); also purchased by lender with and probably formerly used with mouthpiece (2498). |
