Description5 valves. Technical description: Copper with nickel silver ferrules, stays, bow guard etc. The normal British 5-valve tuning arrangement, the 4th valve lowers by 5 semitones, the 5th valve by 1 semitone. Valve type: 5 Périnet valves. Repair History: Touchpieces for valves 4 and 5 are replacements. There are ferrules between the bows where cuts have been made at some time to allow dent removal. At some time the instrument was silver-plated; this plating was removed in 1990. The bell rim, an applied brass strip (not wired), may be a replacement. Overall size: 570; bell 248 252. Sounding length: minimum 2645. Bore: mouthpipe at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 11.3; m.t.s. at c 240mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 14.5; m.t.s. at c 323mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 14.8; centre of 3 valve cluster at c 530mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (1,2,3) 15.2 (except 3rd v.t.s. has one leg a replacement with thicker walled tube, bore 14.8); centre of 2 valve cluster at c 797mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (4,5) 15.2 (5th v.t.s. stuck, but outer diameter 2.2mm greater than other v.t.s.); 1322mm from bell end, c 26.5; c 964mm from bell end, 37.5. B = 0.43. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 12.6 - 11.6. Inscribed on circular applied embossed silver plaque on bell "HIGHAM / MANCHESTER" with lion and unicorn motif in centre and floral pattern around edge. Inscribed on bell "PATENT / CLEAR BORE" / lion and unicorn motif / "EXHIBITION / PRIZE MEDAL / AWARDED / LONDON 1862 & DUBLIN 1865 / TO / J. HIGHAM / MAKER / 127, STRANGEWAYS / MANCHESTER / 38128"; marked "W.C.S. EUPHONIUM NO 1".
