DescriptionTechnical description: Brass, circular form, downwards-directed bell. With shank for C and crook for B♭ Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top-sprung with spring outside valve stem; alignment by key on piston. Repair History: The crook is probably a crook for a cornet in C for B♭, used with this instrument to lower pitch rather than to change tonality. Ballad horn. Nominal pitch: C / Bb. Maker: Distin & Co. London. 1872. Serial numbers: instrument 25021; valves 14226. According to the firm's archives [work shop order books], the instrument was "Ballad Horn plain" made by Bauer in a batch of 4. Overall size: 355 perpendicular to bell; corpus diameter 250; bell 179. Sounding length: minimum 2160; overall length of shank 36.7; air column length of crook 233. Bore: mouthpipe at c 40mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 11.0; m.t.s. at c 354mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 11.7; centre of valve cluster at c 528mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (1,2,3,) 11.7; 1193mm from bell end, c 13.1; 1084mm from bell end, c 14.0; c 622mm from bell end, 18.5; c 571mm from bell end, 19.8. B = 0.49. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: bit internal taper 9.4 9.0; external taper 9.0 9.8. Crook internal taper 9.5 8.9; external taper 11.0 11.9. Shank/crook receiver taper 11.7 11.3. Inscribed on bell "DISTIN" in banner and trumpet trade mark / "Patent Light Valve / DISTIN & CO. / MAKERS / 9 10 GRT. NEWPORT ST. / LONDON / 25021"; on side of valve casings and inner stems, and on top and bottom caps "19", "20", "21"; on side of 2nd valve casing "DISTIN LONDON" forming ellipse around "MAKER" / "14226". Crook stamped "SIB". Shank for C and original crook for Bb missing. The crook is probably a crook for a cornet in C for Bb, used with this instrument to lower pitch rather than to change tonality. Usable pitch: With own crook, plays at A4 = 440 Hz; with shank or crook of (3348), plays at Old Philharmonic pitch. Given with, formerly used with and possibly supplied by manufacturer with mouthpiece (3616). Specific usage history: Used by Andrew Shivas (1926 1996) for domestic music making.
