DescriptionTechnical description: Brass; demountable at three ferrules. Distal bow wired to bell, probably not an original feature.
Inscribed on bell garland "NICHOLAS WINKINGS MAKER LONDON".
Decorative features: Bell garland embossed with stylised foliage; ball with groove; simple turnings on ferrules. Bound with heavy braided cord, 8.5mm diameter, of gold colour metal covered thread, with two large tassels of gold and silver coloured thread.
Comparison of the two bows and their corresponding ferrules suggests that a section c 37.4mm long has been broken off the proximal bow. The ferrule at the proximal end of the bell section is loose but not removable; a position giving 1.5mm extension beyond the main tubing would match the fitting of the distal bow. This ferrule differs in detail of decorative banding from the other three ferrules and may not be original but is probably of comparable date.
Usable pitch: Plays c 40 cents below A⁴ = 440 Hz.
Overall size: 695; bell 115.
Sounding length: 2092.
Bore: minimum (mouthpipe), 10.25; at 1046mm from bell end, c 10.7; at c 240mm from bell end, 15.1; at 18.3mm from bell end, 66.8. B = 0.78. Bell cutoff = 1300 Hz.
Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 12.5 - 12.0.
Performance characteristics: The input impedance and harmonicity of the air-column resonances are reported in Myers and Campbell 2006.
Lent with mouthpiece (3283), made for use with this instrument. The exhibition catalogues referring to this instrument describe a pair of trumpets by Winkings; the other of the pair appears to have been lost between 1904 and 1964. Some of the miscellaneous crooks described below under (3292) may have been associated with this pair of trumpets.
