DescriptionThis instrument is of guitar shape showing some influence from the instruments of Chanot. It has a soundboard of spruce; fingerboard, back, ribs, tail-gut protector, neck and scroll of sycamore; endbutton and pegs of hardwood. The sound-holes are of a C shape, with nicks to indicate the bridge position. The soundboard has been made of two pieces, but they are not joined in the centre. Varnish of a chocolate brown colour. Two piece back of figured sycamore with a close deep figure, almost horizontal but slightly up in the centre. Flattish fingerboard. Measurements: Neck is 132mm long; fingerboard 263mm long, 19.1mm wide at nut, 41.7mm wide at bottom. Soundboard arch 13mm, Back arch 11mm. "RD" scratched on the ribs on either side at the waist, "LLD" snatched on the ribs at either side near the bottom. The instrument has been badly damaged - the scroll has broken off, the back joint separated, and much of the front broken. Current ownership: Gift of Sir Gerald Elliot, 1984. |
