DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. `Modèle français', with the valves positioned to the left of both mouthpipe and bellpipe. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the back (sic); 3rd valve loop leaves from front and returns to front; 1st valve loop leaves from back and back; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the front (sic). No water-key. With shank for B♭ and crook for G. Valve type: 2nd valve is Périnet. 1st and 3rd are transitional type, retaining the narrow diameter and vertical windways of the Stölzel piston, but not with the casing continuing into the main tubing of the instrument. All three valves top-sprung, spring outside stem enclosed in a capsule; alignment by key on piston. The valve passages are arranged so that the windway passes straight through all three valves when 1st and 3rd valves are operated. Repair History: The shank for B♭ appears to be a replacement as its serial number does not match the instrument. Maker: Gautrot. Paris. Post 1845, probably c 1860. Overall size: 332; bell 125. Sounding length: overall air column length of shank 105.9, of crook 340. Bore: shank at c 25mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.3; shank at distal end, 9.6; crook at c 35mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.8; crook at distal end, 10.0; instrument body at c 40mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 10.0; m.t.s. at c 274mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bores 11.1 11.6; v.t.s. (3,2,1) 11.6. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: shank m.r.t. 8.9 8.3, crook m.r.t. 9.7 8.9; shank external taper 11.0 11.6, crook external taper 10.9 11.7; shank/crook receiver taper 11.8 11.0. Inscribed on side of 2nd valve casing with monogram in an ellipse, the monogram probably including "G"; inscribed on valve stems "1", "G / X / 2", "3"; inscribed on shank "23277" and on crook "SOL". With brown painted shaped wooden case, possibly original. Shank for A, crooks for Ab etc missing. The shank for Bb appears to be a replacement as its serial number does not match the instrument. Usable pitch: with shank for Bb plays at Diapason Normal; with crook for G plays c 60 cents above A4 = 440 Hz. Purchased by lender with and possibly formerly used with mouthpieces (2936), (2937) and (2938). Previous ownership: ex Bruno Kampmann collection. |
