DescriptionTechnical description: Silver-plated brass. With alternative main slide section having additional tuning-slide at bottom of main slide. Additional tuning-slide: length of each inner leg 119 allowing increase in air column length of nearly 238mm. The main slide without the additional tuning-slide appears to have been designed for and used for some time with a handle which is now missing. The inner slides are copper-plated. Overall size: 970; bell 138. Bore: The main slide without additional tuning slide:- at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 10.3; not expanding in 100mm from mouthpiece receiver; descending slide, 11.5. The alternative main slide section (with tuning-slide at bottom):- at c 40mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 10.6; not expanding in 100mm from mouthpiece receiver; descending slide, 11.5; additional tuning slide 12.8; ascending slide, 11.5; joint, 11.5. Bell section :- m.t.s. bore 12.1 - 13.6. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. (both main slide sections) 11.9 - 11.2. Slight crack in bell flare. The embellishments are heavily worn where the player would hold the instrument. Inscribed on front of bell "EXCELSIOR CLASS / RIVIÈRE & HAWKES / 28 / Leicester Square / LONDON"; on back of bell "2760". With applied plaque on bell engraved with the name of a former owner "A. FALKNER". Embellished ferrules, not of uniform styling: at least three different designs are distributed randomly between the three main sections. The styling and workmanship, while having small variations, give no grounds for doubting that the three sections were all originally supplied together as an outfit. Usable pitch: Playable at Old Philharmonic pitch with mouthpiece (2501) with both main slides. The alternative main slide's tuning-slide pulls 40mm for A⁴ 440 Hz, and further for use at A⁴ = 435 Hz. Purchased by lender with and possibly formerly used with mouthpiece (2501). Specific usage history: Arthur Falkner (1871 - c 1954) played in the Queen's Hall Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra; as a youth he was solo trombone of the Kettering Town Band. A photograph of Falkner is reproduced in Geiringer 1943, Plate XLIV. |
