DescriptionTechnical description: Blackwood with german silver ferrules and keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, and bell. Original named ebonite mouthpiece. Barret action. Brass tube in L1 tone-hole. R2 tone-hole covered. Curved speaker with chimney on the front of the instrument. Long-tailed British throat A♭ key. C♯ mechanism. Tone-hole for R1 through tenon of upper section. Joint between sections lined with german silver. 13 keys, 3 rings, 1 plate, 4 ebonite rollers. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T + ring; throat A♭. L3: T + ring; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; Barret action (E♭₄/B♭₅; F₄/C₆); side trill keys 1-2. R2: Plate. R3: T + spectacle (forked B♭₃/F♮₅); cross B♭₃/F♮₅. R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; F₃/C₅. Keymount type: screwed in pillars. Keyhead type: modern. Playing accessories: Reed, ligature, and reed-cap. (5500) and (5283) in a black leather case fitted with beige leather. Also in case: leather reed case with 11 reeds on perspex; green leather reed case with 6 reeds on perspex marked H.C. Prew; tuning fork at A = 439 in a case; broken conductors baton; screwdriver; knitting needle; tin with reed making tools; cork grease; two matchboxes with guards for upper and lower teeth made out of tinfoil; 1st flute part, and 2 clarinet parts for the British national anthem; cleaning cloth; crotchet hook; double clarinet stand (collapsible); 2 white pipe-cleaners; assorted string; one extra mouthpiece - modern plastic; 3 extra ligatures; cork bung; assorted programmes; letter stating that (5500) and (5283) were owned by H.C. Prew for whom Arnold Bax composed his clarinet sonata. (5500) in B♭ and (5283) in A are a matched pair of clarinets. |
