DescriptionThis instrument has a soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, neck and scroll of maple; tail-gut protector and fingerboard of ebony; pegs, tailpiece, chin-rest and endbutton of rosewood. It uses a standard violin tuning. The instrument has a patchy orange varnish and dyed pear/poplar/dyed pear purfling. The soundboard is of medium width even grain. There is a small unplugged hole at top of soundboard where it was clamped to the top block. There is deep figure on the ribs and two piece back, the figure on the back up in the centre and down at the edges. There are plugged holes on the back at the top and bottom set off centre, the top hole to the treble side, bottom hole to the bass side. The one piece neck and scroll have a lighter figure. Measurements: Neck 131mm long; fingerboard 274mm long, 24.7mm wide at nut, 40.8mm wide at bottom. Soundboard arch 16.5mm; Back arch 15mm. Repair History: Damage to table in 1978 repaired soon afterwards. Labelled "CARLEEN HUTCHINS / SUS No 105 / Montclair, N.J. VIOLIN 1972", the '105', 'VIOLIN', and '72' handwritten. "CMH" monogram on label and also stamped on the wood on the back inside. "G-D-A-E" written on the back inside. "VIOLIN / EADG" scratched on the bass upper bout rib. Playing accessories: chin rest, 1 fine tuner. With hard case and cavas case cover. Damage to table in 1978 repaired soon afterwards.
