Description

Technical description: Brass body with brass keywork and cocus mouthpiece. Three pieces: mouthpiece, one-piece body, bell. Mouthpiece with long brass tenon sliding into top of body for tuning. Skeleton tube with chimneys and finger-rests for L0, L1, L2, L3 and R1 finger-holes. The cross-key for F natural shares an axle with the spectacle. All leaf springs have raised seats on the body. Bell, conical with soldered brass rim, carries bascule of B natural key: no ferrules, but sleeve at top of body has half-round wire rim: thumb rest shaped and swallow-tailed, soldered to a finger-rest. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side F₄/C₆; side trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: T + spectacle. R3: T + spectacle (forked B♭₃/F♮₅); cross B♭₃/F♮₅. R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; F₃/C₅. Keymount type: pillars on base-plates soldered to body. Keyhead type: saltspoon. With well-made fitted wooden case lined with blanketing: metal cap, with cut-away for ligature, showing traces of nickel plating. Minor deformation of bell rim. Repair History: The chimney and `finger-rest' for the R1 finger-hole a replacement by E. Planas, 1986. General usage of type: Probably made for use in a mid-19th century brass band. Usable pitch: 436-440 Hz.
