DescriptionTechnical description: Brass; with clapper key. Shank for B♭ only. Valve type: 3 Stölzel valves with spring inside sleeve; alignment by key on sleeve, and square stem; metal partitions. Repair History: The shank for B♭ is a modern replacement: the original could be expected to have had a minimum bore of c 11.1. Overall size: 259; bell 117. Sounding length: minimum 1280; air column length of shank 87. Bore: shank at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.3; shank at distal end, 8.6; instrument body at c 40mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 11.1; m.t.s. at c 225mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bore 11.4; v.t.s. 11.4; 640mm from bell end, c 12.2; c 305mm from bell end, 17.3. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: shank m.r.t. 9.3 8.6; external taper 10.5 11.8; shank/crook receiver taper 12.0 11.5. No inscriptions. With protective caps for valve touches. The original shanks and crooks (probably for Bb, A, Ab, etc) missing. Soldered spot on bell probably site of a screw in music card holder nut, not present. The shank for Bb is a modern replacement: the original could be expected to have had a minimum bore of c 11.1. Usable pitch: High pitch, but not quite as high as Old Philharmonic. Performance characteristics: Clapper key allows whole tone trills. Purchased with mouthpiece (643). |
