DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at 15° right of front; 3rd valve loop leaves from left and returns to 15° left of front; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the left. With double water-key with single touchpiece. With shank for B♭, not original. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top-sprung with spring inside tubular stem; alignment by unequal lugs on spring plate. Repair History: Spurious bottom springs have been added, presumably when original springs grew weak; the shank for B♭ is a replacement. Maker: by Laubach and Sons. Edinburgh. Circa 1885. Serial number: 1571. Laubach was a dealer, not a maker. Overall size: 307; bell 125. Sounding length: overall length of shank 85. Bore: shank at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 7.6; shank at distal end, 8.8; instrument body at c 30mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 10.4; m.t.s. at c 280mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bore estimated 11.4 (m.t.s. stuck); diameter of passages in pistons (3,2,1) 11.4 (all v.t.s. stuck). Dia of mouthpiece receiver: Shank m.r.t. 9.6 8.4, external taper 11.0 11.3. Shank/crook receiver taper 12.1 11.1. Inscribed on bell "LAUBACH & SONS / Greenside Place / EDINBURGH". Decorative features: Embellished top and bottom valve caps. Leaks very badly. Spurious bottom springs have been added, presumably when original springs grew weak; the shank for Bb is a replacement. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch. Purchased by lender with but probably not formerly used with mouthpiece (845). |
