DescriptionTechnical description: Ebony with ivory ferrules and silver keywork. Six pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, middle section for the fingers of the right hand, lower section with keys, bell. Tuning slide. Thumb-hole lined with ivory. F₄/C₆ for L3 instead of E♭₄/B♭₅. Bevelled touchpieces. Shaped levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a fusiform swelling. Integral wooden thumb rest. 5 keys in saddles. 12 keys. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮; throat A♭. L2: T. L3: T; F₄/C₆. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side E♭₄/B♭₅; side trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: T. R3: T; B♭₃/F♮₅; side B♮₃/F♯₅. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keymount type: blocks, swelling, saddles. Keyhead type: flat square. Crack in bell. Mouthpiece missing. Repair History: Only two silver keys left. The others are obviously german silver replacements made before it was acquired by Shackleton. General usage of type: According to Heyde (in Waterhouse 1993) this clarinet was made by the Leipzig maker C. Werner although marked "C.C. WERNER / WIEN". Such instruments would have been intended for a market where people had not heard of the master, but knew that the best horns and clarinets were made in Vienna. |
