DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood with ivory ferrules and brass keys. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Mouthpiece: of dark wood with an ivory ferrule; the aperture flares towards the tip, increasing in width from 8 to c 11; table 14 by 55; no groove for cord; lower 12mm thickened above the ivory ferrule to strengthen the socket; tip chipped. Barrel waisted, with tenon for mouthpiece. Upper section: on top ornamented with a groove; speaker liner projects 4.5mm into bore; side throat G♯ in saddle. The touch for the shake key is somewhat spatulate and is turned towards the front. Lower section: levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a bell-shaped swelling. Wide ivory ferrule, no thumb rest. Bell continuous, with ivory rim. All tone-holes under keys are lined with metal; all keys have modern-type pads. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭ (long). L3: T; E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; trill throat A-B♮. R2: T; B♮₃/F♯₅. R3: T; B♭₃/F♮₅. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keyhead type: round flat. Keymount type: wood knobs; throat A♭ key has a saddle; swelling. With boxwood reed-cap; has a split 52mm long. Bell chipped; some pads loose. The head of the throat A♭ key is of slightly different design to the others; as it is the only key in a saddle it is possibly an addition. G♯₃/E♭₅ key has a steel pin in place of the original brass one, wood is damaged. Previous ownership: Purchased by H.I. Brackenbury from Woods, Newcastle, 1922, for £0/12/6.
