Description3-valve double principle. Technical description: Silver-plated brass. 3-valve `Enharmonic' system valves: 1st and 2nd valves double with respect to 3rd. Windway leads from mouthpipe to 3rd valve, then via one of two alternative windways through 1st and 2nd valves back to the third valve, thence to bell. Valve type: 3 Périnet-type valves. Overall size: 858; bell 358. Sounding length: minimum 3904. Bore: mouthpipe at c 40mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 12.6; m.t.s. at c 425mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 15.95; centre of valve cluster at c 921mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (3,1,2,3) 16.05; at 1952mm from bell end, c 30.9; at c 1649mm from bell end, 38.9. B = 0.42. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 13.8 - 13.0. Stamped on bell "CLASS / A / Enharmonic / Patented" / "50 MEDALS OF HONOUR" within banner / monogram FB / "BESSON & CO / Prototype / 198 EUSTON ROAD / LONDON / ENGLAND" / five pointed star; on valve casings, top and bottom caps and stems "10", "11", "12"; on side of 2nd valve casing "BESSON / BREVETE / 1124( )7", the fifth digit incompletely stamped and could be "3" or "5". Decorative features: Floral ornamentation on bell. Leak in mouthpipe. 2 stays missing, one loose. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch.
