DescriptionThe soundboard of this instrument is made of spruce; the back, ribs, scroll and neck are made of sycamore; and the pegs, fingerboard, tail-gut protector and endbutton are made of ebony. The soundboard is made of one piece of wood with a wide grain on the bass side and a close grain towards the treble. The soundboard has ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling and a mark where the chin has rested on the instrument. The back is also made of one piece of wood that is well figured. The neck and pegbox are made fom one piece of wood. The instrument has a golden red varnish that has been chipped away around the bridge. There is also damage to the soundboard near the bottom of the instrument. Measurements: Neck length 119mm; fingerboard length 246mm, 22.0mm wide at nut, 38.1mm wide at bottom. Arch of soundboard 15mm; back arch 13mm. Labelled "Copie de Antonius Stradiuarius Cremonensis / Faciebat Anno 1721" with typical Stradivarius "AS" monogram in bottom right hand corner. Large amount of damage on the soundboard, the varnish has been chipped away around the bridge area, and there is a gouged piece of soundboard removed from near the bottom. (Reid Collection). |
