DescriptionTechnical description: Brass; two main tuning-slides. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the right; 3rd valve loop leaves from left and returns to front; 1st valve loop leaves from back and returns to left; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the right. No water-key. With shanks for B♭ and A. Valve type: 3 Périnet-type valves, top-sprung with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by unequal lugs on spring plate. Main windway through valves straight when no valves operated; registered design of February 1858 (Dr Oates's later model of `straight through' pistons, not his `equitrilateral' pistons). , Repair History: One leg of 3rd valve tuning-slide replaced with thicker-walled tubing. Bow of 2nd main tuning-slide crudely repaired with external sleeve. At least one of the shanks appears to be a replacement. Post 1858, probably c 1860. Serial number: 943. Possibly made by, or for, Joseph Pimlott Oates. Overall size: 347; bell 123. Sounding length: overall length of shank for Bb 79; of shank for A 174. Bore: shank for Bb at c 25mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.9; shank for Bb at distal end, 9.7; shank for A at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.0; shank for at distal end, 7.9; instrument body at c 45mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 9.0; first m.t.s. at c 260mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bores 11.3 11.6; second m.t.s. 11.6 11.8, v.t.s (3,2,1) 11.9 (except for one leg of 3rd v.t.s, 11.6, evidently a replacement); bell 126. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. of short shank 9.7 9.0, of long shank 9.2 8.4; external taper of short shank 11.0 11.6, of long shank 11.1 11.8; shank/crook receiver taper 12.7 11.0. One touchpiece missing; two stays broken (previous crude solder repair failed). External taper of short shank split. One leg of 3rd valve tuning slide replaced with thicker walled tubing. Bow of 2nd main tuning slide crudely repaired with external sleeve. At least one of the shanks appears to be a replacement. General literature references: Webb 1985, p.53. Usable pitch: Plays c 70 cents above A4 = 440 Hz; tuning slides allow use at A4 = 440 Hz.
