DescriptionThis instrument has a soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, scroll and neck made of sycamore; and pegs, fingerboard, tailpiece, tail-gut protector, and endbutton made of ebony. The soundboard is very close-grained, with ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling. The purfling trench is not perfectly cut so that the purfling has broken in a number of places as it was being put in. The instrument is covered with a fine quality brown varnish that has worn off where the player rests his or her chin against the soundboard, but is otherwise in good condition. There is a plugged hole at the top of the soundboard. The back is made of one piece of wood and has a birds-eye effect grain pattern. There are clamping holes on the back at the top and bottom, which have been filled with an ebony plug, both placed off centre towards the treble side. The neck and scroll are made of a single piece of flamed sycamore. Measurements: Neck length 132mm; fingerboard 267mm long, 21.1mm wide at the nut, 47.0mm wide at the bottom. Soundboard arch 14mm; back arch 11mm. Labelled "RUDDIMAN / 17 MAKER", and inked on "298"/ Performance characteristic: Warm, full, even tone; A fine example of 18th-century Scottish violin-making. Current ownership: Lent by H. Allen. |
