DescriptionTechnical description: Ivory with silver keys. There is a slender onion shaped baluster at the top of the instrument. The inward flange at the base of the bell is unusually small. The low C key has no fish tail, it has a straight touchpiece as do the two E♭ keys. There are two vent-holes in the bell. 3 keys Keymount type: blocks, the upper one forming half a raised ring; SATB. Keyhead type: C key: flat, round; E♭ keys: flat, square. There is a section missing inside the bell socket and a smaller section missing from the middle joint socket. There is also a large chip missing from the flange at the base of the bell. There are a number of small cracks particularly around the reed well but these are not significant. Usable pitch: A₄ = 415 Hz. Performant characteristics: Bright clear tone quality, with a good response particularly in the upper octave. Intonation is difficult even with some unusual fingerings. E₄ and particularly E₅ are poor in quality and intonation, G₅ is very sharp. Illustration references: Vol. 1 p.78. Previous ownership: Purchased by H.I. Brackenbury from Howarth for £4/0/0.
