DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood with ivory barrel, ivory ferrules, and brass keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Mouthpiece: blackwood with an ivory ferrule, socket type, not original, but contemporary. Barrel flask-shaped, with tenon, ivory. Upper section: speaker liner projects into centre of the bore. Lower section: wide ivory ferrule, no thumb rest; levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a bell-shaped swelling. All key holes lined with brass. (Wood's patent of 1800). L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; zig-zag F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side trill key for throat A-B♮. R2: T; cross B♮₃/F♯₅, R3: T. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keymount type: blocks, swelling. Keyhead type: flat round. Bell chipped and repaired. Mouthpiece missing. Repair History: B♭, G♯ and B♮ corrector tone-holes filled in (an older player of the period would regard these as useless extras) leaving 6-key English clarinet. |
