DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. `Koenig' wide-bore model. Two main tuning-slides. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at 15° right of front; 3rd valve loop leaves from left and returns to 15° left of front; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the left. No water-key. With shank for B♭. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top-sprung with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by three unequal lugs on spring plate. Maker: Antoine Courtois. Paris. 1856 58. Serial number: 2713. Overall size: 310; bell 126. Sounding length: Shank overall length 88. Bore: shank at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.9; shank at distal end, 10.0; instrument body at c 30mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 10.1; first m.t.s. at c 222mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bores 11.5 11.8; second main tuning slide 11.8; all 3 v.t.s. (3,2,1) 11.8; 20.5mm from bell end, 68. Bell cutoff = 1300 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: shank m.r.t. 9.6 9.; shank external taper 11.5 12.3; shank/crook receiver taper 12.1 11.1. Inscribed on bell "MEDAILLE / DE 1RE CLASSE / EXPOSITION / UNIVERSELLE / 1855" in circle, and "APPROVED BY / Hermann Koenig / New Model / of / ANTOINE COURTOIS / Breveté / FACTEUR DU CONSERVATOIRE IMPERIAL / 88, rue des Marais St. Martin / CI DEVANT RUE DU CAIRE / Paris / JULLIEN & CO / Sole agents / 214 Regent St. London"; on side of valve casings and inner stems, and on bottom caps "1", "2", "3"; inscribed on shank mouthpiece ferrule "SIb". Stamped inside 3rd valve top cap "2713". With black leather style covered wooden case (not original). Probable shank for A and crooks for Ab etc missing. Usable pitch: Plays at c 100 cents above A4 = 440 Hz; main tuning slides draw sufficiently to enable use at A4 = 440 Hz. Performance characteristics: With mouthpiece (2461), very good for high notes.
