DescriptionNominal pitch: Bb / A. 3 valves. Technical description: Silver-plated brass. Rotary quick-change valve for B♭ to A; alternative set of four tuning-slides for A₄ = 439 Hz. Two water-keys. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves; `New Valve Action' (top sprung; springs extend when valves operated). According to the firm's archives [instrument books], the instrument was "Clip Trumpet A Gold Bell", made in a batch of twelve. Overall size: 494; bell 116 Sounding length: minimum 1319 (with low-pitch side). Bore: mouthpipe at c 25mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 9.8; m.t.s. at c 170mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning-slide bore 11.0; centre of valve cluster at c mm from mouthpiece receiver (with low-pitch slide). v.t.s. bore (3,2,1) 11.1; at 660mm from bell end, c. 11.0; at c 295mm from bell end, 15.55. B = 0.68 (with low-pitch slide). Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 10.7 - 10.0 Inscribed on upper side of bell "BOOSEY & HAWKES LTD" / "N.V.A." and "Clippertone" superimposed / "LONDON", and on lower side of bell "142164"; on side of quick-change valve "24"; on cap of quick-change valve "B♭" and "A"; on side of 1st valve "7", 2nd valve "8 / 111763 / PATENT 193729", 3rd valve "9"; on valve bottom caps "7", "8", "9". One set of alternative slides (main tuning-slide and three valve tuning-slide) inscribed "L.P."; other set have no inscription. Decorative features: Art-deco style bell engraving; mother-of-pearl inlaid valve touchpieces. Performance characteristics: more responsive and better in tune in A than in B♭. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch and A⁴ = 439 Hz; a shallow mouthpiece is required, otherwise plays flat. Playing accessories: with tuning bit (not original) and set of spare strings. With shaped fitted attaché case, probably original. Purchased by lender with and possibly formerly used with mouthpiece (3211). |
