DescriptionTechnical description: Blackwood with german silver ferrules and keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, goose-neck crook, upper section, lower section, upturned bell. Ebonite mouthpiece with a long table, ligature and wooden reed-cap. Crook has device for music card holder. Two speakers: one with tone-hole on the crook to overblow. Second speaker for throat B♭, which would be out of tune when operated with the same speaker. All tone-holes covered. Additional side key for E♭₃/B♭₄. Lower section: shaped thumb rest with sling ring. Metal bell carries tone-hole and key-head for the lowest note. Music card holder indicates that the instrument was equipped for military or marching band use. L0: Plate; speaker 1; speaker 2. L1: Plate; throat A♮. L2: Plate; throat A♭. L3: Plate; cross E♭₃/B♭₄. L4: C♯₃/G♯₄; E₂/B♮₃; F♯₂/C♯₄. R1: T; alternative side E♭₃/B♭₄; side F₃/ C₅; side trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: Plate + vent. R3: Plate + vent (forked B♭₂/F♮₄); cross B♭₂/F♮₄ . R4: G♯₂/E♭₄; F₂/C₄. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: modern. Overall size: height c 860. Sounding length: c 1257. Bore: 23.0. Stamped only on lower section "HAWKES & SON / LONDON". With cocus wood reed cover, and leather and cardboard case, compartments. Repair History: Upper and lower sections cracked. Upper section has band fitted to restrain cracking. Lower section socket repaired with ebonite ring but this too has cracked. Upper speaker key has plate covering repair and there are numerous plates carrying pillars where a crack has gone through original pillar hole. Usable pitch: A₄ = c 450 Hz. |
