DescriptionThis boxwood, brass-keyed oboe was made by Floth, in Dresden, in 1807. It has an onion shaped baluster at the top, an octave key hinged at the back of the instrument and two vent holes in the bell. The key-heads are flat and octagonal and curved around the instrument. The C sharp key overlaps the low C key and depresses both, but is hard to depress effectively, suggesting that it would not often be used. The overall size of the instrument is 571mm. System: 7 keys L0: 8. L1: T. L2: T. L3: TT. L4: G♯; F♯. R0: R1: T; B♭. R2: T. R3: T; F. R4: low C; C♯; E♭. Key head type: flat octagonal. The B♭ and F key-heads are curved around theinstrument. The octave key-head is circular.Key mount type: blocks and raised rings. Signature/Marks: Stamped on upper section: crown with cross / "FLOTH" / indecipherable symbol; on middle section: crown with cross / "FLOTH"; on bell: crown with cross / "FLOTH / DRESDEN". Measurements571.Bore at narrowest point: 4.70.Diameter of reed well at widest point: 7.5Technical Description: Boxwood with brass keys. No ferrules or lined joints. There is an onion shaped baluster at the top of the instrument. The octave key hole has a removable brass lining. The octave key is hinged at the back of the instrument within the baluster as in nos 1539 and 66). There is no sign of any support for R0. The octave key and the R4 keys have felt pads, the material for the other pads is unknown. The G♯ key is attached to the lower joint. The C♯ key overlaps the low C key and depresses both. There are two vent holes in the bell. |
