DescriptionTechnical description: Brass, with two alternative main tuning-slides for E♭ and D♭; no water-key; fitting for music card-holder, complete with lyre-style clip. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, bottom sprung; alignment by key on piston. Overall size: 652; bell 180. Sounding length: with Eb main tuning slide, minimum 1983; with Db tuning slide, minimum 2233. Bore: mouthpipe at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 9.3; centre of valve cluster at c 171mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (1,2,3) 11.6; m.t.s. at c 434mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 12.4; with Eb main tuning slide at c 587mm from mouthpiece receiver or with Db main tuning slide at c 837mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 13.0; 1116mm from bell end, c 14.4; 992mm from bell end, c 16.0; c 653mm from bell end, 20.4; c 559mm from bell end, 22.6. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 11.2 10.1. Inscribed on bell "Gautrot Breveté / PARIS" and trademark: anchor with rope and letters "G A" within ellipse; on side of valve casings "1", "2", "3". In original fitted wooden case, with nickel plated brass plate on lid inscribed "Eugene Couthier / a Villeberny / Canton de Vitteaux / CÔTE D'OR". Case fitted for Db tuning slide and two mouthpieces (or mouthpiece and shank) and music card holder only. Also in case two tutors: "Méthode de ALTO ou Saxhorn Alto" by G. Parés, printed 1895, and "Solfège composé par Rodolphe", undated but probably of the same period, and a hand written fingering chart. Repair History: Brass knobs missing from valve tuning slides 1 and 3. Purchased by lender and probably formerly used with mouthpiece (3926).
