DescriptionTechnical description: brass, single-coil with tuning slide in centre, after the style of a post horn. With one crook in E-flat, probably not original. High pitched (456 Hz). Instrument is most likely missing a small tuning bit.
Overall size: perpendicular to bell 305mm; corpus diameter c 246mm.
Sounding length: minimum 1760mm; crook air-column length 197mm.
Bore: mouthpiece at c 52mm from mouthpiece reciever (minimum bore) 10.3mm; m.t.s. at c 253mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning-slide bore 11.5mm; at 880mm from bell end, c 10.5; at c 306mm from bell end, 14.8; at 30.4mm from bell end, 66.6.
Diameter of mouthpiece receiver; crook receiver 11.6-11.0mm; m.r.t. of crook 10.4 not tapered; external taper of crook 10.6 -11.0mm.
Signature marks: Inscribed on garland "COURTOIS NEVEU AINE RUE DES VIEUX AUGUSTINS A PARIS"; on ferrule of crook receiver "FA".
Repair History: Crook not original. Replacement tuning slides probably incorrect, having a bore of 11.5 whereas the bow and tubing just before and after are estimated to be 10.6.
