DescriptionTechnical description: Rosewood (?) with german silver ferrules and keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Ebonite mouthpiece with a long table, ligature and reed cap made by Hawkes. Long, hardly bulbous barrel with a metal tuning slide. Upper section: zig-zag rod and axle speaker, tone-hole on the front of the instrument, chimney, speaker liner projects c 2mm into bore. Wood under touchpieces for speaker, throat A and cross keys recessed to fit them. Long tailed throat A♭. Lower section: patent C sharp and rollers on L4 and R4 touchpieces. Thumb rest. All leaf springs fixed with dark pins. No metal rim to bell. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side F₄/C₆; side trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: T + spectacle. R3: T + spectacle (forked B♭₃/F♮₅); cross B♭₃/F♮₅. R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; F₃/C₅. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: modern. Serial number: 13915. According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was made by Griffits [sic]. Given out 24 Jan 1900; received 3 Feb 1900. Overall size: 645; 577 to top of barrel. Bore: at C4 hole 15.2; at F3 hole 16.6. Stamped on upper section with trumpet and banner trade mark incorporating "BOOSEY" and "TRADEMARK" / "BOOSEY & CO. / MAKERS / LONDON / 13915"; stamped on bell "BOOSEY & CO. / LONDON / 13915"; stamped on barrel and lower section "BOOSEY & CO. / 13915"; stamped on mouthpiece "HAWKES & SON / MAKERS / LONDON / 2"; ligature incorporates "H". Playing accessories: With german silver ligature. With german silver reed cap. Repair History: Chip repaired in rim of bell. Usable pitch: A4 = c 456 Hz. Used in pair with A clarinet (2291). |
