DescriptionTechnical description: Silver-plated brass. Circular, bell-forward form; narrow mouthpiece receiver model. No water-key. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, bottom-sprung; alignment by key on piston. Signature marks: Inscribed on bell with lion-and-unicorn motif / "Prize Medal" / monogram RC & Co / "Patent / RUDALL CARTE & CO / Manufacturers / 23 / BERNERS STREET / OXFORD STREET / LONDON Vocal horn. Nominal pitch: C. Maker: Rudall Carte and Co. London. Post 1878, probably c 1890. Serial number: 3182. Overall size: 273 perpendicular to bell; corpus diameter 250; bell 168. Sounding length: minimum 2419. Bore: mouthpipe at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 10.4; instrument body at c 130mm from mouthpiece receiver, 10.4; m.t.s. at c 363mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bores 11.5 11.6 (measurably different); centre of valve cluster at c 849mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (1,2,3) 12.0; 1210mm from bell end, 13.1; c 639mm from bell end, 18.5. aB = 0.67. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 10.9 10.5. Inscribed on bell with lion and unicorn motif / "Prize Medal" / monogram RC & Co / "Patent / RUDALL CARTE & CO / Manufacturers / 23 / BERNERS STREET / OXFORD STREET / LONDON / No. 3182". Decorative features: Embellished valve top and bottom caps. With black wooden fitted case and cleaning rod. The case has positions for mouthpiece and cleaning rod (or two mouthpieces) only, so crooks were not part of the original equipment. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch.
